Dean and Jerry Back Together Again (VIDEO)

Here is another great teevee moment…  A couple of months ago it was announced that Jerry Lewis was leaving the annual MDA telethon. What wasn’t clear was if it meant that he wasn’t going to do the telethon this year or if this year would be his last appearance. (See this NYT article ). At any rate, I love Jerry Lewis and I will miss seeing him on Labor Day weekend. Here is one of my favorite moments when Jerry and Dean were “re-united” by Frank. This is an obvious set-up and was repeated years later before Dean died. At any rate this was a great teevee moment.

Comedian Jerry Lewis and the Muscular Dystrophy Association aren’t saying why they’re fully parting ways after 45 years and raising more than $1 billion for the nonprofit through its annual telethon.

But the 85-year-old comedian told reporters last week that he plans to hold a press conference the day after this year’s telethon to talk about what he thinks is important. When pressed by a reporter about his role with the telethon, Lewis said: “It’s none of your business.”

Dean Martin in Vegas c. 1964

In the early sixties there was this Italian-craze, we ate spaghetti on on checkered table clothes, my parents made those candle thingies out of empty Chianti bottles, and my mom died her hair black. No, she did’nt, but she did wear capri pants. For me it was the music and I think Dean Martin’s 1958 cover of the 1958 import hit Volare was what got me started on Eurotunes…. no wait maybe it was Bobby Rydell’s version of Volare in 1960? Any way, here’s Dean in Vegas singing Volare and An Evening in Roma around 1964.

Dean Martin – Everybody Loves Somebody – 1964

July 21st, 2011 Comments off

When I was nine years old the British invasion was in full swing; with the Beatles at the top of charts. Then in August 1964, out of somewhere back in time, came this Italian crooner who blew the top off the charts with a reprise of a song that had been around since 1947. Dean Martin had not had a hit in five years and from this time on he stayed on top through 60’s with his popular Thursday night teevee show.

My favorite line in this shtick from Dean “I feel sorry for you folks that don’t drink, because when you wake up in the morning that’s as good as you’re gonna feel all day…”

Dean Martin & Phil Harris have a tea party

March 25th, 2011 Comments off

Here is Dean Martin and Phil Harris having a tea party. The joke was that Dean and Phil were notorious drinkers (although they were not really heavy drinkers). They were two of the hardest workers in entertainment who liked to have a drink now and then. Phil Harris was, for many years, Jack Benny’s band leader and was married to actress/singer Alice Faye. Phil is probably best known today as the voice of the bear Baloo in Disney’s version of “Jungle Book”.
